John Mayer, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix: They are only a few of the most brilliant individuals to ever have played the guitar. What separates them from the rest of the pack is their ingenuity. They naturally had the talent to play the guitar. But most importantly, they have the passion and determination to further uplift that talent. This is why for anyone enthusiastic enough to play the guitar, you have to value the importance of learning the basics and gaining the skills as you go along with your progression. A true passionate guitarist knows the importance of starting from scratch. Therefore, it is only right that guitar chords for beginners have to be in order.
Learning guitar chords is a progression. It can be frustrating to hear other guitarists play something that you couldn’t, but understand they all started out as beginners. In time, you’ll learn to play more complicated plucking and strumming patterns. But for now, stick with the basic guitar chords.
Before anything else though, be particular with the guitar that you are bound to use. For starters, it is recommendable to start with an acoustic guitar rather than an electric one. Aside from making the basic choice, you’ll also be making a more practical one since acoustic guitars don’t need electricity to function.
So for the chords: start with songs that have simple chord patterns that won’t exceed four repetitively-played chords. They don’t have to be anything memorable, just enough to get your hands ready for more complicated patterns. Ember by 311 or More Than Words by BeeGees are the most popular in this case. Though More Than Words need a bit of plucking to be played, it’s still a great guitar exercise.
Once you get used to the calluses and the strumming, you’ll be able to go for more complicated songs with more complicated guitar chords. They don’t have to immediately be hard. Go for something like Unwell of Matchbox 20 or Realize by Colbie Callait. Remember, not every song that you have to play has to be purely acoustic in form. Try mixing it up. One of the most amazing things that you can do with an acoustic guitar is how you can turn even a hip-hop beat into a mellow midnight tune.
And finally, try playing with a group. It’s easier to play and jam along when you are joined by others who are willing enough to learn the guitar with you.
